‘Remember Me’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

Anticipation has been high for Robert Pattinson’s first major post-’Twilight’ role.

After wrapping filming on “New Moon” in May 2009 and before beginning the shoot for “Eclipse” that August, Robert Pattinson headed to New York to shoot his first major post-”Twilight” role: the lead in the romantic drama “Remember Me” opposite Emilie de Ravin of “Lost.” He plays Tyler, a headstrong and slightly lost kid who falls in love with de Ravin’s Ally, a college student from a much different cultural milieu.

Anticipation is high for the film (out Friday, March 12) as fans look forward to seeing Pattinson not only as a human rather than a vampire but also as part of an onscreen couple that doesn’t include “Twilight” co-star Kristen Stewart. MTV News has been following every development of the production — from casting moves to footage from the film to interviews with the stars — and we’ve gathered it all together as part of our “Remember Me” cheat sheet. Here’s everything you need to know before hitting the theater this weekend.

The City Never Sleeps
Pattinson arrived in New York just days after leaving the “New Moon” set and immediately caused a media frenzy. The craziness didn’t stop until the shoot was over. Filming on location in the city streets, Pattinson was routinely mobbed by fans. There was even the wild story — unfounded, as it turned out — that he’d been hit by a taxi while crossing the street.

“There were a lot of crazy moments where you’re filming on location and you’re waiting for people to get out of the shot,” de Ravin told MTV News. “You’re taken out of your work mentality with hundreds of people watching you when you’re just trying to figure out your scene.”

Look At Me
Months later, as the hoopla surrounding the November release of “New Moon” ramped up, the first “Remember Me” trailer dropped online. This was Pattinson like we’d never seen him before: out with the golden eyes and the pale skin, in with an emotionally honest portrayal of a young New Yorker in love.

February brought yet more peeks at the film’s central couple: An exclusive clip of Pattinson and de Ravin at a fair and one of the two of them having dinner together, plus exclusive photos of the couple in bed and soaking wet in the shower. Of that shower scene, Pattinson laughed to MTV, “It’s pretty forward for a second date!”

Never Forget
As the film’s release rapidly approached, Pattinson and de Ravin returned to New York, giving MTV a chance for multiple chats with the pair. In an extensive sit-down interview, Rob and Emilie spoke about their loves scenes, being self-conscious about their acting, their similarities to their characters and much more.

Finally, the entire cast hit the frenetic red carpet for the film’s gala premiere, where the paparazzi were going mad and Pattinson was doing his best to play it cool. As de Ravin explained, though, her co-star has no problem doing that both on- and off-camera.

“He’s amazing,” she said. “He’s fascinating to watch because he’s so naturally subtle and interesting.”

Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning Rock Red Carpet At ‘Runaways’ Premiere

‘It is just rewarding to be here,’ Fanning says.
By Larry Carroll

HOLLYWOOD — Rock stars like to party hard, stay up late and cover themselves in leather and black T-shirts. Movie stars prefer to walk the red carpet in fancy clothes, mingle with famous folks and pose for the cameras. Thursday night, the two worlds came together in celebration of “The Runaways.”

“This is so much fun,” marveled Dakota Fanning, the former child star who comes out in a big way portraying a ’70s teen living the sex, drugs and rock and roll lifestyle. “It’s crazy for a lot of people to finally see it. I mean, it was at Sundance, but it is just rewarding to be here.”

Along with Taylor Lautner, Michael Shannon, Scout Taylor-Compton and others, Kristen Stewart walked down the carpet just a few feet away from the real-life Joan Jett. KStew wore an elaborate, elegant dress while Jett was clad in her signature black leather — and a lot of tattoos.

“She only had one at the time [our movie takes place],” Stewart explained, once again showing off her intense study of the rocker. “And I have it. I have a little jet, beneath the waistline.”

Portraying Jett in the film while working so closely together, Kristen said the rocker also taught her a valuable lesson: Don’t take everything so seriously. “I don’t know how much I learned about myself, so much as my capacity to not care,” she explained. “She’s really good at that, in a way that’s compassionate. It’s not that she doesn’t care — she just is who she is. And I know that’s something most people aspire to be, but she really is.”

Clearly, Kristen and Dakota studied the real-life Runaways closely — so much so, in fact that they even learned to write with the wrong hand. But when it came time for one of them to get the iconic short hairdo of her real-life counterpart, it wasn’t easy for the other to pretend she didn’t care.

“I think Dakota was more emotional than I was, to be honest with you,” Kristen remembered of the fateful day when she had to cut her locks for the movie. “She almost cried when I cut my hair.”

“I did; I almost cried,” Fanning admitted. “For some weird reason, I had an attachment to Kristen’s hair. But [her new look] was amazing, and it was what she wanted. It’s not my hair!”

“It was something I needed to do,” Kristen said of her Joan Jett look, moments before heading into the theater to watch her impressive efforts unspool on the big screen. “I needed to feel the sweat coming down my face; I needed to be able to touch it.”

‘Smurfs’ Actor Alan Cumming Reveals His ‘Gutsy’ Character

Katy Perry, George Lopez and Neil Patrick Harris are all in the 2011 movie as well.

Editor’s note: After this story was published, Quentin Tarantino’s publicist told MTV News that the director is not involved with the “Smurfs” movie.

With a “Smurfs” movie coming together some 30-plus years after the franchise broke through here, names are coming fast and furious of who will be providing the voices of the iconic blue characters. We caught up with a “Smurfs” co-star who is decidedly taller than three apples high to get the scoop on his character.

“I’m Gutsy,” Alan Cumming revealed when we spoke to him over the weekend at Elton John’s Oscar viewing party. As best as we can tell, there was never a “Gutsy” on the 1981-89 cartoon series, which hooked millions of little kids on the idea of tiny blue people with stubby tails living in giant mushrooms.

Cumming also told MTV News that Quentin Tarantino would be playing Papa Smurf’s right-hand man, Brainy, but a publicist for the “Inglourious Basterds” director denied his involvement.

“Other voices are Katy Perry; she’s Smurfette,” Cumming said of the “I Kissed a Girl” singer, who will be making her theatrical debut as the voice of the most prominent woman to live with all those dozens of little blue dudes. “George Lopez [as Grouchy] is another one.”

Revealing further details, Cumming added that the previously announced Neil Patrick Harris would be playing what sounds like a brand-new human character — and that the Smurfs’ evil nemesis could be a big name. “Gargamel, I’m not sure [if I can say]; they’re still negotiating with someone that would be fabulous,” he said. “Neil Patrick Harris is [playing] the nice man who helps us.”

“Smurfs” is targeting a July 29, 2011, release and will likely be in 3-D. Stay tuned, as additional Smurfs names are likely to emerge in the upcoming days and weeks.

Will ‘Precious’ And ‘Avatar’ Change Things For Black Actresses?

Gabourey Sidibe, Zoe Saldana and more discuss how Oscar attention might make a difference.
By Larry Carroll

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Sunday evening, Mo’Nique was making history by accepting a Best Supporting Actress award and paying tribute to the first black actress to win an Oscar, “Gone With the Wind” star Hattie McDaniel. In a year in which “Precious” put some marvelous acting skills on display and Zoe Saldana went to outer space twice in the sci-fi hits “Star Trek” and “Avatar,” one has to wonder: Are there any boundaries still standing in Hollywood for black actresses?

“As I look around, I think we’re pretty good,” grinned “Precious” star and fellow Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe when we caught up with her before the weekend at Essence’s annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon. “But we can get better. Everything could be better.”

“I think for women in general, it’s getting much better,” agreed Saldana, now the star of the biggest film of all time. “The fight has always been in us. I think we’ve just changed the reasons as to why we’re fighting.”

Mary J. Blige, who also attended the event, said that she had similarly been inspired by the nominations of people like Sidibe and Mo’Nique. “I absolutely think it’s better for black women in Hollywood,” Blige explained. “We understand, and so many of them understand, that it’s hard work — and they’ve done the work. This is why they’re being nominated.”

“It’s getting better every day,” agreed Paula Patton, who when not being known as Mrs. Robin Thicke is the star of “Déjà Vu,” “Idlewild” and other films. “We have a ways to go, but it’s getting better everyday.

“I think it’s done amazing things,” Patton said specifically of “Precious,” arguably the greatest collection of female African-American performances ever assembled — at least, in the eyes of Oscar. “We look at Mo’Nique’s career and being able to showcase her amazing talent. And Gabourey Sidibe is just phenomenal in the film; it’s been very helpful.”

Then there’s Keke Palmer, the 16-year-old “True Jackson, VP” actress who already has several films under her belt, big dreams ahead and said that wins like that of Mo’Nique are making it much easier for her generation. “I definitely see things getting better — we have more young African-American girls coming up and we are doing positive things,” Palmer insisted. “And that’s what we need. I feel like, when I come to a place like [the Black Women luncheon], I get more inspiration and it makes me want to speak out to girls that are younger than me that don’t know they can do it.

“I can do anything that I want to do, because when they did it it wasn’t able to be done,” Palmer said of Oscar winners like McDaniel and Halle Berry who’ve come before her. “And whatever I’m going to be achieving soon, people probably thought would have never been done. That makes me want to work harder and keep making people proud.”

‘Spider-Man’ Director Marc Webb ‘Casting A Wide Net’ For Peter Parker

‘(500) Days of Summer’ filmmaker wants to talk to ‘Avatar’ team about making the superhero movie in 3-D.
By Brian Warmoth

The fate of the new Spider-Man movie’s story and the coveted role of Peter Parker remain closely guarded subjects.

New director Marc Webb, who took home a Best Screenplay award for “(500) Days of Summer” Friday night at the Independent Spirit Awards, wouldn’t reveal any secrets on the red carpet, but he did say that he’s open to different possibilities as he looks for a lead actor. He’s had “cool conversations” with “(500) Days” star Joseph Gordon-Levitt about the character and communicated with “Avatar” director James Cameron about filming “Spider-Man” in 3-D. And though he wants to hear more from Cameron, Webb won’t commit to Levitt or any other face to put under the mask at the moment.

“We’re casting a wide net,” Webb told MTV News. “That’s really all I can say at this moment.”

He did say the mythology behind the character fascinates him and that his interest in Spider-Man goes way back.

“I think that there’s something about Peter Parker that’s just — he’s a legend, and that mythology is appealing to me, and it has been for a long time,” the director explained. “It’s really just a dream come true.”

Asked about his exchanges with James Cameron and “Avatar” producer Jon Landau about 3-D possibilities for “Spider-Man,” Webb wouldn’t delve into specifics. He did, however, predict meetings down the road.

“I’ve talked to Jon [Landau] a little bit,” he said. “I’d like to talk to those guys more. They’re fantastic representatives for 3-D, and we’ll be talking more about that, but right now, I’m doing a pilot, so my mind has been sort of consumed by that a little bit.”

As for Sam Raimi, the director he will inherit Spider-Man from, Webb offered nothing but praise, noting that he still sees untapped potential. “[Raimi] did something fantastic, but I do think the mythology of Spider-Man is wide and vast,” he said. “I think there’s more opportunity to explore that cinematically. Sam is not only a great guy, but a fantastic director, and it’s a humbling prospect, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Regarding Peter Parker and Webb’s own adventure into 3-D filmmaking, meanwhile, announcements may be on the way soon.

“In the coming weeks, more will unfold,” he promised.

‘Paranormal Activity’ Star Micah Sloat Talks Sequel ‘Director Drama’

‘It’s not going to suck, which most horror sequels you would imagine would,’ he insists.
By Brian Warmoth

Photo: MTV News

The rumored list of directors Paramount has in line to succeed Oren Peli as the director of “Paranormal Activity 2″ includes Brian De Palma, Brad Anderson and Greg McLean, but one of the first movie’s stars, Micah Sloat, won’t tell if he knows which one has the best shot.

“Paranormal Activity” earned Peli a nomination for Best First Feature on Friday night (March 5) at the Independent Spirit Awards, but Sloat offered a vote of confidence that whomever receives the franchise next will be up to the task.

“I know a lot I can’t tell you,” Sloat told MTV News. “It’s really interesting — the whole director drama with the ‘Saw [VI]‘ director [Kevin Greutert]. That’s been public.”

Greutert had the green light to helm “Paranormal Activity 2″ before Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures enforced an obligation in his contract to return and direct “Saw VII 3-D.” Without an official replacement, all Sloat would share was how much he expects “Paranormal 2″ to live up to its breakout namesake’s legacy.

“All I can tell you is that I’m very excited for the project,” Sloat said. “It’s really cool. It’s gonna be really interesting, and it’s not going to suck, which most horror sequels you would imagine would.”

As a low-budget indie film, “Paranormal Activity” overcame a lot of odds to get a wide release in 2009 — two years after it first screened. Its reported 434,000 percent return on an initial $15,000 investment put it in the record books for profitability, but the pressure will be heavy on “Paranormal Activity 2″ to emulate that success on a larger scale.

“We have money now, but we’re staying true to the heart of the movie, to the spirit of it and to the vision,” Sloat explained.

How that vision gets treated will depend greatly upon who sits in the director’s chair, whether Paramount picks a modern film legend like De Palma or takes risks with a big payoff in mind like Peli did and chooses an up-and-comer.

Robert Pattinson Reveals The Secret To His Success

‘The only way I can really get things done is if I completely believe the opposite,’ the ‘Remember Me’ star tells MTV News.
By Larry Carroll

Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ Getty Images

Sometimes it ain’t easy being young. But it sure can be dramatic, and it certainly can make for some amazing stories.

The latest reminder of this is “Remember Me,” a powerful drama starring “Lost” actressEmilie de Ravin and the incomparable Robert Pattinson. In the film, RPattz is a troubled young man grappling with life after his brother’s suicide and finding salvation in the arms of Ally, a woman determined to savor the beauty in life following her mother’s murder. The March 12 movie, like life itself, is sloppy and beautiful all at the same time.

Recently we caught up with the film’s perfect-looking leads to discuss the difficulties of being young. And they told us that beneath the surface, we’re all magnificently flawed.

“Yeah, probably,” was de Ravin’s response when we asked if she sometimes feels as confused as her character. “Yeah. I mean, it’s OK to be confused, isn’t it?”

“I guess it depends on how confused,” Pattinson grinned. “Or about what.”

“That’s true,” she responded, saying that confusion isn’t always a bad thing. “There is a degree.”

And where there’s confusion, there’s often rebellion — manifested in the film by Rob’s character Tyler, who has a serious problem with authority in many scenes that are drawing comparisons to James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause.”

“I used to be more [rebellious],” Pattinson said of his younger days, adding, “I’ve been beaten by the system.”

What do the actors do when they feel life has got them down? Well, James Dean famously banged his head.

“I don’t physically beat my head against a wall,” de Ravin smiled, looking at her co-star. “Do you?”

“Sometimes,” Pattinson responded. “That’s why my hair is so flat.”

Then there’s self-righteousness, a characteristic often shared by rebels; sometimes they really are right — and RPattz told us that in his own unique way, he does have a self-righteous streak.

“He’s righteous to a fault,” Rob said of his character. “I definitely [am as well], but I always get proved wrong.

“The only way I can really get things done is if I completely believe the opposite,” explained the “Twilight” star. “If I make myself believe the opposite, then the thing I initially wanted will happen. That’s the way I’ve worked my whole life.

“If I keep working, working, working at the opposite of what I want,” he grinned, “I’ll get everything I want.”

Will ‘Hurt Locker’ Controversy Affect Its Oscar Chances?

With a rash of critics attacking the film’s portrayal of the military, some experts wonder if the backlash was orchestrated.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: First Light Production

Weeks before the 2009 Academy Awards, news broke that two of the child actors in awards-season darling “Slumdog Millionaire” were still living in squalor and had allegedly not been fairly compensated for their work on the worldwide blockbuster. It was an inflammatory story that dominated entertainment headlines and dogged the film’s producers up until “Slumdog” took home eight Oscars, including Best Picture, in late February.

A year later, the same narrative seems to be repeating itself with the Iraq war drama “The Hurt Locker.” Following a string of key awards-season wins — from the Directors Guild of America to the BAFTAs to the Broadcast Film Critics — the film finds itself under assault from a rash of critics, including in the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times, highlighting purported inaccuracies. It’s an assault some fear could affect the movie’s chances of winning big on Oscar night.

” ‘The Hurt Locker’ tries to articulate that experience [of modern warfare], but those of us who have served in the military couldn’t help but be distracted by a litany of inaccuracies that reveal not only a lack of research, but ultimately respect for the American military,” Paul Rieckhoff wrote in a Newsweek piece that seemed to touch off the backlash.

Are we seeing the Swiftboating of an important film or valid criticism from those with direct experience of events being played out on the big screen? Is all this an orchestrated conspiracy or merely showbiz as usual?

“It’s like clockwork every year,” Dave Karger of Entertainment Weekly told MTV News. “It’s almost comical at this point. Whatever is perceived as the front-runner, people try to tear it down. I am not saying this is a coordinated attack by any group of people. I think it’s the instinctive reaction of people in Hollywood.”

Not everyone deeply engaged in Oscar prognostication views the “Hurt Locker” controversy as arising purely from the momentum of the media cycle. “It’s obviously coordinated,” Jeff Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere told MTV News. “These things don’t happen at the last minute on their own.”

You can call it a conspiracy or simply the result of news outlets latching on to a timely story, yet the salient question at this point is not how the controversy originated but if it will negatively impact “Hurt Locker” on Sunday during the ceremony.

Wells said any issue about the portrayal of the military being unrealistic should not sway many voters. “For anyone to say that was a defining impact on their view is very young, kind of naive or not very bright,” he said.

Still, the Best Picture race is a close one at this point, with “Hurt Locker” battling against “Avatar,” and neither film can afford to dismiss the importance of grabbing every last vote. “Last year, ‘Slumdog’ was so far out in front, no other movie was going to win anyway,” Karger said. “This year, because it is so close, I think ‘The Hurt Locker’ could very well lose. And I would hate that that might be because of any negative campaigning.”

And then there are those who have been criticizing “The Hurt Locker” not because of any campaign, but because they view the portrayal of servicemen as inaccurate and unfair. John Nolan, the editor of conservative entertainment site Big Hollywood, who has been writing about the film since before its release last summer, takes specific issue with the movie’s main character (played by Jeremy Renner). “He’s driven by an addiction,” Nolan told MTV News. “He’s sort of a post-traumatic-stress candidate, as opposed to a heroic, noble character, which you’ve seen soldiers bring up in the form of [criticizing] his recklessness, his disregard for the rules and the fact that he practically gets one of his own men killed.”

Such criticism aside, and even allowing for the possibility of a backlash conspiracy, Nolan argues that any sort of warfare-based condemnation will ring hollow when it comes time for Academy voters to cast their ballots. “I just can’t imagine that being anti-military or anti-American would hurt ‘The Hurt Locker’ with a left-wing Hollywood,” he said. “If it was an orchestrated campaign, the best way to hurt the film would be to call it a John Wayne, flag-waving, jingoistic film.”

So what does all this mean come Sunday night? Will the announcement of “Avatar” or “The Hurt Locker” as the Best Picture winner put to rest this hullabaloo? Or will the controversy join the many others — from “Slumdog” to complaints about the treatment of a spinal-cord patient in “Million Dollar Baby” to allegations that the real-life star of “A Beautiful Mind” was an anti-Semite — as part of Oscar lore? And will we be spinning the same narrative in 2011?

David Poland of Movie City News has a feeling we might. “There’s never a conspiracy, but you can put something in the water,” he told MTV News. “I feel like the media feels a need to cover it. There are positive stories. There are negative stories. It’s standard operating bullsh–. It’s not special. It is not brutal. It’s the just the way it is.”

‘Twilight’ Star Kellan Lutz ‘Wouldn’t Want To See’ ‘Breaking Dawn’ In 3-D

‘I don’t think I wanna see a little baby half-vampire in 3-D,’ actor says.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kristen Stewart gave it a maybe. Robert Pattinson thinks it might give him a headache. So what does Kellan Lutz think about the idea of releasing “Breaking Dawn” in 3-D, when (or if) it’s made? Well, he’s not too keen on the idea.

“I heard they were talking about it. I don’t really care to see it in 3-D,” he told MTV News on the red carpet at Cosmopolitan magazine’s 2010 Fun Fearless Males party on Monday night in New York City.

Like Pattinson, Lutz isn’t a big fan of movies filmed in multiple dimensions. “3-D kind of hurts my eyes anyways. ‘Avatar’ was amazing in 3-D and in IMAX, but I don’t think I wanna see a little baby half-vampire in 3-D,” he said, echoing a similar sentiment made by Stewart. “There’s just some scenes I just wouldn’t want to see in 3-D.”

And with no formal announcement that more movies will be shot from the “Twilight Saga,” Lutz is in favor of breaking the book up into two flicks with “New Moon” helmer Chris Weitz back in the director’s chair, if the film should get the green light. “I’d love to see Chris Weitz come back,” he said late last year. “I just had so much fun shooting with him. I mean, obviously I would just love to do ['Breaking Dawn']. There’s no word. … Hopefully we get that phone call, and if they want to make it into five movies, I just don’t want it to end. I love my character so much.”

Gerard Butler Laughs Off Jennifer Aniston, Jam Rumors

‘I read a rumor somewhere saying that I was actually a woman,’ Butler laughs.
By Jocelyn Vena

Gerard Butler

Gerard Butler was romantically linked to Jennifer Aniston while they were filming their new comedy, “The Bounty Hunter.” With the film about to be released on March 19, those rumors will inevitably be brought up again, and Butler said he just needs to keep a sense of humor about the whole thing.

On the red carpet of Cosmopolitan’s 2010 Fun Fearless Males party, MTV News asked the Scottish actor whether he was fun or fearless in the upcoming flick. “I have to be both [in the movie], and in my life I have to be both,” he said. “I just kind of have to be on a lot.”

And following his own advice to laugh at the gossip about himself, he dished about which rumors happen to be his favorites. “I read a rumor somewhere saying that I was actually a woman,” he said. “There was one, apparently … I was just talking about Jen, saying, ‘I’m not a gimp,’ going on about … how I want all these other women in my life.

“Then there was one about jam,” he continued. “Apparently, I like to go into cafés and order scones and take out my mother’s homemade jam. And I take it with me everywhere. And in the same article, it said apparently Johnny Depp likes to travel with his own toilet seat.”

While it’s hard to imagine anyone not laughing at that kind of gossip, Aniston herself explained to “Access Hollywood” last month that his easygoing attitude is what made them friends. “Gerry’s the most unpretentious guy,” she said. “He’s a guy’s guy, but he’s absolutely the most lovely and sort of self-deprecating [person], and just what you see is what you get.”
